In the 1980s, the reading public of the Soviet Union was shocked by the story “Dancing at Hitler’s Headquarters,” published in the cult magazine of the Soviet intelligentsia “Foreign Literature.” The story touched on a topic that seemed understandable to every person and did not require explanation: the topic of the curse of fascism . She touched upon the issue of oblivion of the past, the memory of ancestors, forgiveness of evil. The plot of the story is simple: in one of the small towns of Poland, where one of Hitler’s headquarters was, an entertainment center with a dance hall was built. The place is at a fork in the road, there are a lot of people: the income is good. One thing was very confusing: prisoners of war worked on the construction of the headquarters, and upon completion of construction they were shot. Another thing was confusing: the hero of the story, who fought in these parts, asked some of the dancers: “Is it possible to dance on bones?”, and received the answer: “So what?” It was scary. The horror is that those who built the dance hall and those who danced in it did not care who Hitler was, that there was a war, and that prisoners of war were shot at this place. Dancing provided income, and the rest... Here our conscience is faced with a dilemma - what do we want: if we want to forgive fascism, then “Let's dance”; if we want to curse fascism, then what should we build? Let everyone ask themselves the question: what do we want? Do we want to forgive fascism or curse it?
