Mircea Cărtarescu (b. 1956) is a true star of modern European literature. The multi-volume saga “Dazzling” (Orbitor, 1996–2007) brought him the reputation of the “Romanian Marquez”, and many critics began to call his style “Balkan baroque”. However, truly wide readership success came to Certarescu with the release of a collection of his love prose “Why We Love Women” - in Romania alone, the book sold a record-breaking circulation of 150,000 copies for the country. The extraordinary combination of refined eroticism, Nabokov's exquisite sense of form and bright national color made Certarescu the most widely read Romanian writer of the last decade.
