Polybius is the greatest, along with Herodotus and Thucydides, Greek historian. He fell under the wheel of fate and participated in the events of that fateful period when, according to him, more was accomplished than in all previous history. Kingdoms rose and fell, nations rushed about, cities perished, and finally the world was united under the single rule of Rome. All this was perceived by Polybius as an exciting performance. Polybius watched the first part of the tragedy as a spectator. In the second he was one of the actors. Polybius is a man of two worlds. An enlightened Hellenic, he lived for many years in Rome, which became his second home. He explained to the Hellenes the peculiarities of the soul of his Roman friends, he defended his Hellenic friends before the Romans. His teacher was the Greek freedom fighter Philopoemen - the last Hellene, as he was called. His pupil, his named son, was Scipio, who embodied the ideal of the Roman, the man who completed the Roman conquests. Polybius understood both worlds and described them. That is why his life emerges from history, and his life is incomprehensible without history. For students of historical, political science and cultural studies, as well as for everyone interested in the history of antiquity.
