The action of the work takes place in the late seventies - early eighties in the large Siberian village of Verkh Katunskoye. The main characters of the novel - a farm manager and a simple milkmaid - meet when the manager is appointed to a new position, after he has evaded justice several times. As a result, a bright love breaks out between them, which ends tragically. The novel also has other main characters who are intertwined throughout the novel with the leading characters.
