“Child of the Waves” is a collection of fantastic parables by the French prose writer and poet Jules Supervielle (1884–1960). He is not very widely known in Russia, but the French call him one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Supervielle's prose is surprisingly poetic. In each of the parables, he creates a special world, similar and at the same time unlike ours, in some ways even turned inside out - a world in which its own, sometimes strange, laws operate. And there are always those - loners, eccentrics, outcasts - for whom the existing order of things is not acceptable. The stories told by Supervielle are full of sadness, but they are beautiful, and their beauty - sad, thoughtful, tender, slightly painful - is mesmerizing.
