Isabelle Grave is a professor of theory and art history at the Städelschule University of Fine Arts (Frankfurt), curator and publisher of the critical journal Texte zur Kunst. In her new book, a collection of autofictional texts, Isabelle turns not to external plots, but to something completely intimate, trying through writing to overcome the pain of losing her parents and anxiety from the premonition of an impending catastrophe. However, the recording of everyday life and subjective observations paradoxically return the narrator to an external, but transformed by personal experience, “another world.” In her masterfully sketched notes, evoking the mythologies of Roland Barthes, Grave captures the radical political, social and cultural changes that occurred between 2014 and 2017, examining how these macro shifts affected her own life.
