Alexei Pavlovich Chapygin (1870-1937) - Russian Soviet writer; born in Olonets province (now Arkhangelsk region) into a poor peasant family. In his youth he came to St. Petersburg to work. He began publishing in 1903, with considerable assistance in this from N.K. Mikhailovsky and V.G. Korolenko. In 1913, his collection “Unsociable” was published. It was followed by a series of stories about taiga inhabitants “On the Swan Lakes”, in which the writer examined the relationship between man and nature, as well as the story “The White Monastery”. After the October Revolution, two biographical books were published: “My Life” (1929) and “On Paths and Roads” (1930). The last two decades of the writer's life were devoted to historical prose. During October 1926 - January 1927, he wrote the historical novel “Razin Stepan,” which had a significant influence on the development of the genre of the Russian epic novel. In 1935-1937 four parts of Alexey Chapygin’s new novel “Walking People” were published. The second volume of this publication includes the end of the second and third parts of the historical novel “Razin Stepan”, in the center of which is the fate of Stenka, a Cossack son, rebel and people’s “driver”. A vivid recreation of Russian antiquity and extensive use of folklore characterize the creative style of the original Russian writer.
