Khadzhi-Murat Magomedovich Muguev (1893–1968) - poet, writer, playwright and publicist. Born in North Ossetia, in the family of an Ossetian Cossack. With the rank of cornet, he took part in the First World War, fighting on the Caucasian and Persian fronts. After the October Revolution he sided with the Bolsheviks. Upon returning to Vladikavkaz, he served in the Red Army, then collaborated with Soviet intelligence, and worked at the Soviet consulate in Turkey. In 1941, Muguev went to the front; after being seriously wounded at Stalingrad, he lost his sight. But even after the war, he continued to engage in literary creativity and social work. The story “To the Shores of the Tigris” presented in this volume is based on a real incident. 1915 World War I. A historical figure - Yesaul Gamalii, commander of the Cossack hundred of the Uman regiment, which was then stationed in Persia - receives an order to lead the hundred in the direction of Mesopotamia. There she must meet with the troops of the allied British army and maintain the morale of the British. The task is not so much strategic as propaganda, but in order to complete it, the Cossacks will have to overcome more than a thousand kilometers - through the desert, under the scorching sun, losing their way and running into Turkish ambushes...
