The master of our cinema, the creator of the fireworks of Soviet film comedies “Merry Fellows”, “Circus”, “Volga-Volga”, Grigory Alexandrov began his career as an assistant to the great Sergei Eisenstein. Together they filmed the world-famous film “Battleship Potemkin”. The directors had a long creative and personal relationship, about which there were many rumors. Subsequently, their paths diverged, and Alexandrov “put an end to it” on the “Jolly Fellows” booklet presented to Eisenstein: “To my dear Teacher, who taught me differently.” G. Aleksandrov was favored by the authorities, Stalin loved and supported him, but intrigues were woven around the name of one of the few directors of Russian nationality. Critics met his “Jolly Fellows” with hostility. The film was banned until Gorky intervened and helped organize a viewing of the new film comedy by members of the Politburo. This book, based on original documents of the era, hard-earned and surviving by luck, largely clarifies the atmosphere of behind-the-scenes intrigues of the Soviet silver screen. The rarest, miraculously preserved fragments of correspondence between Alexandrov and his wife and muse, Soviet cinema star Lyubov Orlova, are unique.
