Terry Smith (b. 1944) is an Australian theorist, critic and curator of contemporary art, a former member of the Art & Language collective, which stood at the origins of Western conceptualism. His five essays, collected in this book and preceded by a thorough introduction by the editor, were written between 1972 and 2012 and are devoted to the nature of conceptual art and conceptualism, considered in theoretical, philosophical, ideological, geographical and artistic aspects. Smith presents five approaches and five facets of this art in historical dynamics, looking at it from the inside (as a member of a group of conceptualists), then from the outside (from the perspective of criticism, philosophy, other variants of conceptualism, etc.) and discussing its role as an intermediary between the later modernism and the latest art.
