The English novelist who published his works under the pseudonym Henry Sutton Merriman was actually named Hugh Stowell Scott (1862–1903). He worked as an agent for the Lloyd's insurance company, but had undoubted literary abilities, which allowed him to later devote his life to writing novels, many of which were quite popular in their time. Merriman wrote his books very carefully, maintaining a balance of reality and fiction, thanks to which his novels, even today, occupy a high place among adventure and historical literature. At the same time, he was an unusually modest person, which explains his not so high popularity in literary circles. His novels include "Uncertainty" (1890), "Prisoners and Captives" (1891), "Slave of the Lamp" (1892), "From Generation to Generation" (1892), "The Sowers" - considered one of the best (1896), as well as “The Corner” (1898), “The Island of Trouble” (1900), “The Glove” (1901), “The Last Hope” (1903) and others. This volume presents the exciting historical novel “Guardsman Barlash” (1903), which tells about the famous Napoleonic campaign.
