Theodor Eske-Choinski (1854–1920) - Polish critic, novelist and publicist, author of a number of works on historical topics; one of the most ardent champions of conservatism. The novel “The Last Romans” published in this volume tells the story of the beginning of the decline of the Great Roman Empire. End of the fourth century. There are two emperors on the throne: Theodosius in Constantinople, and in Rome - Valentinian II, recognized by him as co-ruler. The conflict between the latter and his commander, King of the Franks Arbogast, leads to the death of Valentian, and Arbogast appoints his protege Eugenius in his place. Theodosius, seeking to strengthen his power and avenge the death of his co-ruler, opposes Arbogast - and this is not just a struggle for power. Christian Constantinople is opposed to a largely pagan Rome. And, winning, he actually takes the last steps towards dividing the empire into two parts: Eastern and Western.
