The Chronicles of the Jewish People is a scholarly study written in engaging and accessible language. This is a wonderful description of the journey of the Jewish people through the world and through history. Raymond P. Sheindlin takes us from the very beginning, when the Jewish people - a semi-nomadic tribe - moved to Canaan from Mesopotamia, shows us all the stages of the historical development of the Jews and ends with contemporary events in the Middle East. He has spent many years carefully researching Jewish history, being a professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary in America. Dr. Sheindlin specializes in medieval Hebrew poetry, with a special interest in Spain and other regions of Arab culture. He is also active in the literary translation of medieval and other Jewish texts. Recipient of the National Endowment for Jewish Culture's Cultural Achievement Award (2004), he was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1988, a Kullman Fellow at the New York Public Library (2005–2006), and a visiting professor at Harvard University (Spring 2007). He is a member of the American Academy of Jewish Studies and serves on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals. Professor Sheindlin provides us with a broad historical panorama, and we see not only how Jews lived in various countries around the world, but also understand how historical events influenced development Jewish culture.
