The tribune of the Gallic Legion, Constantine Germanicus, on instructions from the Roman Emperor Valens, goes on a diplomatic and reconnaissance mission north to the lands of the Goths and Antes. Together with a team of soldiers of the Empire and rowers from all over the Ecumene, he sails on a merchant ship, and then a river boat along the Greek (Black) Sea and the rivers of modern Ukraine. The goal is to reach the military capital of the Goths, Danparstadt, “the city above the Dnieper.” On the way, the crew faces deadly skirmishes with the Huns, Sarmatians, and attacks from river pirates. In Olbia, the tribune is received by the Steward of the Kingdom of the Goths and his sister, Princess Ulrika.
