In a small provincial town at the end of the 19th century, a young girl Nastya lives with her mother and older sister. A hard life forces the girl’s sister to work tirelessly, and she herself to study hard and care for her sick mother. Later in the story, Nastya meets a young high school student, Semyon. This meeting will affect the girl’s entire life and lead to terrifying consequences in the future. The novella is a story about internal psychologism, the first bright feelings and cruelty of people.
