The novel by Carlo Pasero de Corneliano (1790–1845) stands among the outstanding educational novels of the 18th century and belongs to the genre of the travel novel, which was embodied in the works of Fielding, Smollett, Montesquieu and others. The main figure of the novel is the Eternal Jew, who himself composed his biography and recreated a picture of his wanderings across countries and centuries from ancient Greece and Rome to modern times. The Appendix to the book contains legends about the Eternal Jew, reflected in medieval literature and folklore.
