The author defines the concept of “civilization” as a set of functional connections between cultural, legal, socio-economic and political factors that form trends that are stable over time. The Byzantine law of precedents that regulated some relations of land ownership is examined in detail. The extent to which Eastern Christian patristics and Byzantine theology influenced the formation and functioning of society, being the reason for its sacred character, is analyzed. It is shown how Eastern Christian ideas of divine energy and synergy determined the Byzantines' understanding of a number of problems in the social and economic policies of the authorities.
