The crusade, organized by European sovereigns in response to the fall of the Principality of Edessa, did not work out from the very beginning. The Byzantine Emperor Manuel turned out to be a not timid man, pointing out to the hapless crusaders from the threshold that the East is a delicate matter and will not tolerate warlike boors for long. Alas, the lesson taught by the Byzantines did not benefit the leaders of the new campaign, and the knights and militia paid in full for the self-confidence of their crowned leaders.
