The novel “Tchaikovsky” (1843), which evoked the praise of V. Belinsky, tells the story of old Little Russia during the hetmanate. Based on folk songs and legends, without stopping at the unsightly sides of historical truth, using melodramatic plot lines, the author depicted the harsh life of the Cossack “knighthood” of the Zaporozhye Sich. The novel was created on the basis of family legends (the writer’s mother came from the Tchaikovsky family) and episodes from the Ukrainian Duma about Alexey Popovich.
