“The diary of former KGB colonel Sergei Vasilyevich Trifonov was given to me by his widow. He began conducting it in the fall of 1982, when, before being discharged from service, he was undergoing treatment at a departmental sanatorium in Sochi. On October 20, dozens of football fans were killed as a result of a deadly stampede while leaving the Grand Sports Arena in Luzhniki.
