The stubborn beauty Pannonika - simply Nika to those close to her - was born in 1913 into a family famous not only for its wealth, but also for its amazing destiny. In just five generations, the Rothschilds rose from the poverty of Frankfurt's Jew Lane to the luxurious life of British aristocrats. Having started going out into the world, Nika met Baron Koenigswarter, who taught her how to fly an airplane, married him and was transported to the other side of the English Channel. With the onset of the war, she took her small children to England, and soon she was already fighting in Africa in the ranks of the Free French. It would seem that Nika has everything: children, a handsome husband, a huge fortune. But in the early 1950s, she heard the song “Around Midnight,” written by the then young Thelonious Monk, and her whole life changed. Music bewitched Nika, she separated from her husband and went in search of Thelonious. The musician, rejected by society and in poverty, willingly accepted the friendship offered to him. Nika supported the jazzmen both financially and morally; every evening her Bentley was parked near the next club. The Baroness's reputation was completely ruined by the mysterious death of Charlie Parker in her hotel apartment, but the main scandal was her constant, unconventional love for Thelonious Monk - until his death in 1982.
