The publication of the novel by A. Bely, a writer who aroused the wary and disapproving attitude of the authorities, in the “Literary Monuments” series was delayed for many years. An indispensable condition was the preliminary publication of the novel by the publishing house "Khudozhestvennaya Literatura" with an introductory article by A.S. Myasnikov. This authorized edition, which was also significantly delayed and based on the one-third Berlin edition of 1922, shortened by one third, appeared in 1978. The abbreviated Berlin edition of “Petersburg” - a monument of a different historical time - is more connected with the style and character of A. Bely’s work of 1920 s, rather than with his quests of the pre-revolutionary decade, when the idea of the work was hatched. Based on these considerations, the editorial board of "Literary monuments" considered it expedient to republish not an abbreviated, but the full text of the novel "Petersburg" in its original printed edition of 1913-1914. CONTENTS: From the editor (D.S. Likhachev) (5). PETERSBURG Prologue (9). Chapter one, in which tells about one worthy person, her mental games and the ephemerality of existence (11).
