Jacques Chesset, writer, poet and artist, is rightfully considered a classic of Swiss literature. Back in 1973, he received the Goncourt Prize (“The Ogre”). For the first time, his novel “And the Lord Smelled a Pleasant Fragrance” was published in Russian, in which critics not without reason saw the development of the theme of Suskind’s “Perfumer.” The fact is that the hero Chesse is unusually keenly aware of all smells - from the honey scent of his beloved to the smell of death emanating from a person who is about to die. In the sensual and bloody plot, the amalgam of the highest spirituality inherent in Chesset's style was more clearly demonstrated than ever.
