Luigi Pirandello wrote several novels. The most famous of them is “The Late Mattia Pascal” (1904). The hero of the novel leads a dull existence in a provincial town, being on a meager salary as a librarian and spending his time among dusty books that no one reads, and mice. Family squabbles, the death of children, lonely walks on the beach to somehow kill time and get rid of boredom, and, of course, dreams of liberation. Suddenly, chance helps Mattia - he wins a large sum of money at roulette. He is thinking of leaving for America to find freedom. And again, chance helps him - from the newspapers he learns that a drowned man was found in his hometown, whom his wife and relatives identified as Mattia. Dreams of freedom seem to become reality...
