In the summer of 1944, Wehrmacht Lieutenant General Vinzenz Müller, commander of the 4th Field Army, was forced to capitulate to the Red Army units that surrounded it. In captivity, he joined the National Committee of Free Germany, and after the formation of the GDR, he became a lieutenant general of the National People's Army. In 1961, Müller committed suicide, leaving behind unfinished, interesting memoirs that detail the history of the origins of the Wehrmacht.
