The Synopsis presented below was originally written and published in French at the request of Christians, but rather for the use of Christians who speak that language. It has already been translated into English and presented, book by book, in a Christian periodical. The idea arose that it would be desirable to publish it as one whole. The synopsis of the book of Genesis, which seemed too short, was greatly expanded and completely revised and corrected, but without any significant changes. In introducing the reader to the current edition, it is necessary to say only a few words . He must not expect that he is receiving an interpretation, nor must he suppose, on the other hand, that he is receiving a book which he can read without constantly having to refer to the Word itself, to that part of it which is being treated. The purpose of the book is to help Christians who wish to read God's Word profitably understand the breadth and connection of what it includes. While exegesis may doubtless assist the reader in understanding many passages in which God has given the interpreter a general understanding of the design of the Spirit of God, or furnish philological principles and information which help others to discover that design; however, if it purports to give the content of Scripture, or if the one who uses this interpretation seeks it in it, such an interpretation can only mislead and impoverish the soul. An interpretation, even if it is correct in everything, can give no more than the interpreter himself knows from a given passage. Even the fullest and wisest will in reality be very far from the living fullness of the divine Word. The Synopsis now presented makes no claims of this kind. Deeply convinced of the inspiration of the Scriptures given to us by God, and confirmed in this conviction by the daily and increasing revelation of their fullness, depth and perfection, increasingly felt through grace because of the delightful perfection of the parts and the wonderful connection of the whole, the author only hopes to help the reader in their studying.
