Friction within the Hitler movement between supporters of nationalism and socialism led to the bloody massacre unleashed by Hitler on June 30, 1934, known as the “Night of the Long Knives.” The entire leadership of the SA, led by Ernst Rehm, was liquidated, Gregor Strasser, the former Reich Chancellor, Kurt von Schleicher and Gustav von Kahr, who suppressed the Munich “Beer Hall Putsch” ten years earlier, were killed. To achieve new goals, Hitler needed other people.
