The author received information about the uprising of Soviet prisoners of war in the Afghan Mujahideen training center in Pakistan in the town of Badabera while he was deputy head of the special unit of the Kabul KGB station at the end of April 1985. The Center was informed about this almost immediately. The author told the readers of the magazine “Internationalist” No. 3 (003) for October 2005 in the publication “The War That They Want to Forget.” The author was forced to return to this topic by Evgenia Kirichenko’s essay “Uprising in the Hell of Badaber” (Weekly “Trud” for 6, 11 June 2007). Then I was researching my personal archive on Afghanistan, having studied publications on this topic in periodicals, the author came up with the idea of trying to convey to readers one, in his opinion, closest to the truth, version of these events, in an artistic rather than documentary presentation, in his story “The Missing.” The story offered to the reader is fiction, and although the events described in it are real, the names of the characters, for obvious reasons, are fictitious. It uses data obtained by the author in Afghanistan, where he was deputy head of the KGB special forces, as well as materials from periodicals.
