German officer Clemens Podevils, on instructions from the Wehrmacht command, traveled to the Eastern Front and compiled reports on the deployment and reconnaissance of troops, the results of ongoing combat operations, losses in equipment and manpower, and similar indicators reflecting the state of the army and the situation at the front. In fulfilling his task, the author proceeded from Warsaw to Stalingrad and described in detail in his diary local battles and decisive battles on the banks of the Don, followed by crossing the river, the battle for Stalingrad and street battles for every house, paying special attention to the everyday side of soldier’s life at the front.
