“People of the Middle Ages” is a book by one of the most authoritative French medievalist historians, Sorbonne professor Robert Fossier (born 1927). It is the fruit of the author’s thoughts, incorporating the fullness of his research experience and amazing erudition. On the pages of his work, Robert Fossier creates a collective portrait of medieval people, or rather, a portrait of the “silent majority” - commoners, peasants, artisans who made up 90% of medieval society. It is them who the author considers to be the main characters of that majestic era that was the Middle Ages. Law, war, family, marriage, the environment, faith, feelings and values - Fossier suggests looking at all this from a different angle - through the eyes of common people, looking beyond the front squares of medieval cities, which covered the "worker's quarters". Fossier clears the history of the Middle Ages from numerous cliches, prejudices and myths that have developed over the centuries thanks to stereotypical school education and a touch of colorful romanticism. Robert Fossier is interested in what medieval people thought about themselves, not what historians and politicians think about them. His book is a real expose of the “Black” and “Golden” legends of the Middle Ages, firmly memorized by us since childhood. And this is what makes her reading truly fascinating and exciting.
