This story, written in lively and figurative language, is the life story of a young Japanese pilot, Yasuo Kuwahara. Having completed training at the age of fifteen at a flight school where they trained kamikazes, he became the best in his unit. From 1944 to 1945, Kuwahara served in a suicide squad created to destroy US Navy ships, and witnessed his comrades being sent to certain death one by one. It was only by chance that Kuwahara survived.
