The Roman Antiquities of Dionysius of Halicarnassus was written in Greek at the end of the 1st century BC. This is one of the few ancient works that have survived to this day, containing a consistent presentation of Roman history from time immemorial. It has not been completely preserved. However, the first books remained. This is very important because they describe the events of the ancient history of Rome right up to the end of the early Republic (IV century BC), the least covered in the unlost part of ancient historiography. In addition, the Greek Dionysius wrote for his fellow tribesmen, trying to illuminate phenomena of Roman life incomprehensible to them. Hence his attention to little things, to details, which Roman authors themselves, writing in Latin for the Romans, who did not need to explain what was unknown to the Greeks, usually did not dwell on. This also constitutes an attractive side of the work of Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Despite the high information content of “Roman Antiquities,” it has never been entirely translated into Russian. The only exceptions are a few of its parts or chapters, which were completed for textbooks mainly by the same translators as in this publication. Thus, the proposed publication is the first complete translation of the work of Dionysius of Halicarnassus. The publication is of a scientific nature. It includes research comments, in addition, it is accompanied by a source study article. Volume I contains a translation of books I–IV; in II – from V to VIII; in III – from IX to XX. The last volume includes an article devoted to the work of Dionysius as a historian, as well as an extensive index of names, ethnic names and objects for all books of “Roman Antiquities”. At the same time, the work of Dionysius is interesting not only for specialists in ancient history, but also for a very wide range of readers . After all, it tells about fascinating events, captures vivid images of Roman figures with their complex destinies, and describes the bygone traditions of the original Roman culture. All this information is useful to historians, jurists, especially researchers of Roman law, religious scholars, and classical philologists. An explanatory commentary makes it easier to understand Dionysius's story, which expands knowledge and enlivens modern people's ideas about the ancient world and its unique civilization.
