Martin Dean, using numerous eyewitness accounts and documents that have become available, shows in his book that local Belarusian and Ukrainian police were direct and key accomplices in Nazi crimes. Significantly superior to the German police forces in the occupied territories, local police played a major role in searching for, arresting Jews and escorting them to the place of execution; Often Ukrainian and Belarusian police officers took a direct part in the merciless executions themselves. Martin Dean demonstrates that it was the complicity of the local police that led to the fact that the methods of the Holocaust in the East were significantly different from the methods of the “Final Solution” in Western Europe.
