General of Artillery, in 1942-1943 commander of the Fretter-Picot task force in Ukraine, Maximilian Fretter-Picot dedicated his book to a description of a number of battles on the Dnieper bridgehead, in the Crimea and in the western territory during the retreat of the German army to Moldova, Hungary and Romania. This is a story about German divisions that actually became victims of the erroneous strategy of the High Command, which incorrectly used infantry in combat operations, about the dispersion of forces in the vast Eastern European theater of operations, the lack of reserves, the constant overexertion of soldiers in grueling foot marches in the endless eastern expanses under the so-called ban strategy to retreat, which ultimately led to the mass death of infantrymen.
