Almost every day on our planet there is some kind of holiday or ritual action taking place. People come together to celebrate a joyful event, such as celebrating the New Year, taking part in a carnival, or enjoying a rich harvest. Since ancient times, holidays have played a huge role in human life. They have absorbed the rituals and traditions of the historical, religious and everyday life of many generations of different peoples. E. O. Chekulaeva’s book is dedicated to one hundred great holidays of different countries and peoples of the world. The main attention is paid to official religious holidays: Christian (Orthodox and Catholic), Judaic, Buddhist, Hindu, as well as specific holidays common among Sikhs, in China and Japan. A large section of the book talks about folk holidays, many of which also have a religious basis, and the Appendix contains essays on a number of state and secular holidays.
