At the end of September 1939, Bialystok, Grodno, Kovel, Baranovichi and other once Polish and Belarusian cities unexpectedly became Soviet for their inhabitants, and their population, as well as small Jewish towns, became citizens of the USSR. The fate of the majority was tragic.
