The period of the Spanish Habsburgs is called the “Golden Age of Spain.” In 1700, with the death of Charles II the Bewitched, one of the most infantile, weak and disease-ridden emperors, the golden age ended, and the debilitating War of the Spanish Succession that replaced it devastated the once great empire.
