A book about the Spanish artist, an outstanding representative of surrealism, Salvador Dali (1904–1989). The passion for provocation and shock is the most important component of his work, a hallmark of his behavior, for which he was even expelled from the ranks of the surrealists. Phantasmagoric creatures, the most absurd and contradictory combinations in Dali’s paintings should be understood as a reflection of the unconscious, and the painting itself should be compared with hallucination. Despite his theoretical framework, Dali drew much of his inspiration from the work of other surrealist artists such as Ernst, Yves Tanguy and de Chirico. You can also find traces of the influence of the old masters: Raphael or Vermeer. Based on the surrealist method of “automatic writing”, which opposed the creative will of the artist to those free associations of ideas generated by his unconscious, Dali developed his own “paranoiac-critical” method, which he himself defined as “a spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based on the critical interpretation of chains of crazy visions.” In this emancipation of the unconscious, the decisive influence was the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud, whom Dali met in 1938. The publication consists of five chapters telling about the life of the artist and the history of the creation of each painting presented in the publication. All illustrations have annotations. At the end of the book there is a chronicle of the master’s life and work, illustrated with documentary photographs, as well as a detailed list of illustrations.
