The book by French historian Edmond Faral is dedicated to the daily life of France at a time when this country was at the zenith of its glory and power - during the reign of King Louis IX the Saint (1227–1270). This era is considered the “golden age” in the history of the French kingdom, which came out on top among European states: the French kings were the most powerful rulers in Western Europe, French culture and art flourished with extraordinary force, and Gothic cathedrals were built throughout France. As a matter of fact, it is this period in French history that is usually called the “classical Middle Ages.” The author set himself the task of showing how people of different classes lived during this period of political, economic and cultural prosperity: how knights fought in war and in tournaments, how townspeople made a living and had fun during city festivities, what they all dressed in, what furniture surrounded them in castles and burgher mansions. The researcher offers us a real cross-section of medieval society, highlighting those aspects of life that often appear extremely rarely on the pages of medieval manuscripts. His book is rightfully considered one of the best works in the genre of the history of everyday life.
