Margaret Kane's parents are physicists known for their amazing achievements. The most amazing invention called the Firebird allows users to jump into different universes and promises to revolutionize science. But then Margaret's father is murdered, and the killer, her parents' handsome and mysterious assistant Paul, escapes into another dimension before the law can get his hands on him. Margaret can't let the man who destroyed her family get away with it. She chases Paul through different universes, always connecting with another version of herself. But she also meets alternate versions of other people she knows, including Paul, whose lives are connected to hers in a very similar way. She soon begins to doubt Paul's guilt, as well as her own heart. And she soon discovers that the truth about her father's death is much more sinister than she expected.
