The name of St. Petersburg mathematician Grigory Perelman has been in the news lately. Of course, he made a discovery, but he still doesn’t get the allotted million. During the discussion of money and the oddities of the mathematician, the question somehow remained completely unnoticed: “So what did Perelman discover so great that it caused such a stir and was so highly appreciated by the world community?” And his discovery is really significant: the Poincaré conjecture has been proven (now it is the Poincaré-Perelman theorem), which the best minds could not cope with for more than 100 years. A lot of amazing conclusions in cosmology, quantum mechanics, philosophy and even religion follow from this theorem.
