Moctezuma, the supreme ruler of the Aztec Kingdom, believing in the legend of the coming of the “White God” and rejecting the fears of his fellow tribesmen, opened his rich, vast and densely populated possessions to the small troops of the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes. After the murder of Moctezuma, his nephew Cuauhtemoc, who became the supreme ruler of the Aztec kingdom, declared war on the conquerors. Despite the heroic resistance to foreign invaders, Cuauhtemoc was captured and executed by Cortez.

The historical novel by the classic of Cuban literature G. Gómez Avellaneda (1814-1873) “Cuauhtemoc, the last ruler of the Aztec Kingdom,” rightfully standing in the same rank with novels by V. Hugo, W. Scott, P. Mérimée, published for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. The hero of the novel, Cuauhtemoc, is the national hero of Mexico. A monument was erected to him in the center of the capital; the outstanding Mexican artist D. Alfaro Siqueiros dedicated many of his works to him.
