The intellectual community that developed around the German poet Stefan George (1868–1933) played a very important role in the history of ideas at the turn of the century and the first third of the 20th century. The impact of “Gheorghe’s Circle” extends far beyond the boundaries of poetics or literature itself and affects history, pedagogy, philosophy, and economics. A peculiar Georgian interpretation of politics became part of the life-building project of an entire generation on the eve of the Nazi catastrophe. One of the key models of the Circle was Plato's Academy, and Gheorghe himself was interpreted as "Plato today." The Georgians dedicated a number of books, articles, and translations to Plato, designed to compete with university Plato studies. How did it react to this strange, so non-academic academy? The monograph by M. Mayatsky, based on published and archival materials, is devoted to this aspect of the activities of the George Circle and an analysis of its influence on the science of Plato. The author of the book is M.A. Mayatsky, PhD, Professor, Department of Cultural Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, National Research University Higher School of Economics.
