The main character John is relaxing at a resort in Rio. He meets a lonely girl on the evening beach. John meets her and takes her to his room. In the morning, he sees dismembered corpses of people on the news; that same lonely girl is accused of killing them. But soon John finds out that she is innocent of their murder and tries to help her. He takes her to his acquaintance who lives in the favelas, but they are not safe there either, because the police have already begun hunting for them. On the way home, they encounter poverty, crime and anger - this changes them forever.
