This book presents a description of the clinical picture of a schizoid personality and its problems. The author makes an attempt to understand the nature and causes of the primary failure of ego development and the therapeutic difficulties that arise in connection with this in the treatment of schizoid patients. According to Harry Guntrip, the revival and re-growth of the lost living basis of personality becomes the main problem of psychotherapy because psychotherapists are dealing with people who, no matter how thoroughly they are taught adult social and moral obligations and values at the conscious level of their personality, are unable to maintain at this level because the underlying unconscious layers of their personalities are at the pre-moral level of infantile fear, ego-weakness and escapism.
