The book is dedicated to the short but heroic life of Nikolai Alexandrovich Shchors. Among the names of the legendary heroes of the civil war, the name of Shchors stands next to the name of Chapaev. Both died almost simultaneously, in 1919: Shchors - August 30 in Ukraine, near Korosten station, Chapaev - September 5 on the river. Ural, near Lbischensk. At one of the meetings of the Presidium of the USSR Central Executive Committee in 1935, Stalin called Shchors the “Ukrainian Chapaev.” These words of Stalin found a warm response in the hearts of many thousands of civil war veterans who, under the command of the 24-year-old division commander, fought in Ukraine against the German invaders, Hetman and Petliura counter-revolutionary hordes.
