“Novichok” is not only the substance that allegedly poisoned Sergei and Yulia Skripal, as well as Alexei Navalny, but also the name of a group of chemical warfare agents developed in the 70-80s in the Soviet Union. And “Novichok” is one of the options for the name of the program for the use of chemical weapons by the Soviet Army during the Cold War. In May 1918, a military chemical service was created in the Red Army. In 1921, the process of creating a chemical weapons production industry began in the USSR , which during the Cold War alone produced more than 60 thousand tons of military poison, many types of which were significantly superior in their parameters to their American counterparts.
