The knot of action begins back in 1945, when the Germans, in retaliation for the murder of a policeman, shoot the parents and burn down the house of 12-year-old Anton Steinwijk. Throughout his entire life, Anton, unwittingly, accidentally stumbles upon one or another witness or participant in that long-standing tragedy, learns how everything really happened, who played what role, and how everyone’s lives turned out after that.
