The Apician Corpus is the only surviving ancient Roman cookbook. Compiled in the 4th or early 5th century. n. e. in a late Latin dialect, close to folk Latin. Since antiquity it has been attributed (erroneously) to the legendary gourmet of the 1st century. n. e. Marcus Gabius Apicius, hence the name. The corpus includes two culinary collections - Ten Books of Apicius on the Art of Cooking (Apici decem libri de re coquinaria) with 468 recipes and Excerpts from Apicius (Apici excerpta a Vinidario). The second of them was compiled by the Goth Vinidarius and is preserved in a single Carolingian manuscript.
