Until the 16th century, Europe did not even suspect the existence of the Land of the Rising Sun. However, the “discovery” of Japan turned out to be short-lived: already at the beginning of the 17th century, a few Europeans were expelled from the islands, and Japan itself entered a period of “brilliant isolation”, confining itself within its own borders. The geographical and cultural remoteness of Japan led to the emergence of the very phenomenon that today is rather vaguely called “Japanese mentality.” One of the manifestations of this phenomenon is Japanese mythology - a unique system of mythological worldview, this strange, unlike anything else world. The Japanese world enchants, the Japanese myth draws us into a circle of ideas and plots that seem to belong to another dimension (they are so unfamiliar) - and yet imaginable and understandable. Known in myths, in this treasury of the “national spirit,” Japan becomes closer to us and clearer.
